MY UKAY UKAY BUSINESS EXPERIENCES

The ukay-ukay  (a Filipino version of the flea market) has successfully carved its niche in the country’s local clothing industry. Inside these second-hand clothes stores, shoppers are forced to dig or sift through endless racks of clothes for a good find. This manner of search is called halukay  in Filipino, from where the name ukay-ukay comes. The spread of ukay-ukay shops has made the practice a norm among Filipinos. The allure of inexpensive clothes continues to draw people inside these shops to look for branded clothes for less and eclectic but tasteful pieces. Ukay-ukay remains appealing because it’s the practical choice for clothes shoppers on a tight budget.

I just want to share my experiences with the small business that I started. I’m a college student and I looking for a job to support my studies but because of the pandemic it’s hard for me to find and I’m afraid to go outside and have covid-19. That’s why I think of an alternative way to earn money while at home. It begins when I watched an online live selling of thrift clothes. I search for “UKAY UKAY” Business and I found it interesting because here in the Philippines people do love thrift clothes. To cut the story short I started to study how “ukay ukay” business works. First thing that I considered is the supplier. So I search for a legit supplier and thankfully I found. With 5000 pesos from my savings. I take a risk to buy one bales (includes korean dresses, fashion polo blouse..)

When I got my bales I sort it out, the pricing of each item is easily achieved by properly segregating each bundle’s content into premium and non-premium items. In each bale, you can get a combination of items in good condition while some are in fair conditions and some are damage. Okay, prices are based on the face value of the item. I washed and cleaned some clothes with visible stains to sell them at higher prices.

I have already my Facebook page and shoppe account which is why I easily sell and post it. I even do Livestream to sell my items. Thankfully I get back my investment and earn time. It takes hard work, patience, and dedication to run this business. Competition, nowadays, is getting tougher. But with the right choice of supplier, excellent products to offer or sell, and careful planning and managing, this business will slowly prosper and will be a good source of income. Also, don’t forget to include your business in your prayer! It works.
